Scientific names: Venerupis is combination of Venus, the Roman name for Afrodite, the goddess of love in Greek mythology and rupes, meaning cliff or stone. The Latin pullus means young animal (in particular - chicks).

Other scientific names: Sometimes the species is assigned to the groups Tapes or Paphia., or has the specie epithet senegalensis.
    Easily mistaken asTapes decussatus. that nowadays is only found as shell debris in Swedish waters.
