Netted Dogwhelk
A Dogwhelk creeping over the sediment. The fluff on its shell
is a colony of small polypi, a
hydroid, (Podocoryne carnea).
This species is lives commonly on whelk shells.

Way of life

The Dogwhelk usually sits dug down in the sediment, only the thin inhalent siphon is visible above the sand bottom. Occasionally the shells can be seen creeping on the sediment surface.
