Baltic macoma

Distribution
Distribution in scandinavian waters

Maximum length: 2,7 cm.
Appearance: The shell from the Baltic macoma that has lived on sandy bottoms, is thin and white, pink or yellow in colour, while those that have lived on clayey bottoms have thicker shells and are blue or dark red in colour. There are no lateral teeth by the hinge.
Depth: 0 - ca 30 m, but live deeper in the Baltic.
Environment: Lives dug down in soft bottoms.
Misc: The species can be found in large concentrations, from a few hundred, and up to a couple of thousand per m2.
Classification: The Baltic macoma is a member of the bivalve group under the molluscs.
