Scientific names: The Greek word teredon is found in the Greek drama of Aristofanes ”Knights” and is since mentioned by Theophrastus and Ovidius. It is believed that the word teredon means ships worm. The ending -idae indicates that it is a family within a systematic classification.

Other scientific names: Teredo, Nototeredoand Psiloteredo are the families that are present in Swedish waters with a species each. Lyrodus, Bankiaand Teredoraare families can appear on drift wood.

Other English names: Pile worms and Xylophaga which belongs to the family known as the wood piddocks.
