Common hermit crab

Common hermit crab -
Pagurus bernhardus

Scientific names: Pagouros is Greek for crab. Bernhard l'hermite is a local name for the specie in Bretagne. In turn this name can be related to the celtic expression for a chalky shell: barnagh, berniche, bernak, that has been distorted to bernhard and in another context may be the source of the word barnacle. Linné, (Swedish naturalist) who described the specie, probably got the name from the Dutch doctor and microscopist van Swammerdam, who in an essay from 1737-38 called the specie "Cancellus Bernhard l'Hermite".

Other scientific names: Eupagurus bernhardus.
