Vegetation that
the rough periwinkle finds congenial

In shallow and wave protected bays, where the salt content can vary greatly, a little, dark and thin shelled type of periwinkle is found. In contrast to cliffs and cobblestone beaches, periwinkles can live much of their life under water on leaves of pondweed and eel grass. The fish in the picture is a large pipefish.
