Reproduction

Monostroma grevillei has two different stages of development, a sexual, known, as the gametophyte generation and an asexual known as the sporophyte generation. During the gametophyte generation its lives attached to stationary algae, see the picture on the left. During the sporophyte generation it lives as a microscopic alga that bores into calcareous material, as shown in the picture on the right. Here, it is sitting on a barnacle.
