Problems associated with mussel cultivation

Poisonous mussels?

Poisonous mussels?

There are specie of plant plankton that are sometimes poisonous, mainly specie of blue-green bacteria and dinoflagellates. The blue-green bacterias occur mainly in freshwater and the brackish waters of the Baltic and therefore believed not to be a threat against Swedish mussel farms, but this has to be studied more closely if mussel cultivation is contemplated in the Baltic.
Dinoflagellates are abundant in the Skagerrak, Kattegat and Öresund regions. During the autumn blooms, plant plankton dominate. Those dinoflagellates that pose a serious problem for mussel farms are those specie of the Alexandrium, Prorocentrum and Dinophysis families.
